Hair Loss Part 2

Uncategorized May 12, 2026

Welcome to Part 2 of helping others with hair loss - if you have not read part 1 the link is HERE to help you understand more of what is going on with one of the most requested topic I get asked about, "Is there anything I can do to help with my hair loss?"
This is a multiple blog mini-series -  I will mention a variety of concepts and ideas of what contributes to hair loss based on my own experience working as a professional hairstylist that specializes in working with wavy & curly hair.

I am not a Doctor, Therapist or specialist of hair loss - everything I am sharing is experience only and is advice based on my own experience or the experiences of my own clients that tell me their own stories and solutions.
You are responsible for doing your own research and are advised to consult with a medical expert for all issues related to your own health, wellbeing & hair loss.

1 - Stop Brushing your hair. ANY form of brushing hair (yes, even a wet/styling brush) with repetition can case weak links to form in the hair to eventually snap off.

2 - Back in the day - if you were around for the Atkin Diet craze in 2002-4 that put bakeries out of business at one point from people that stopped eating bread, pastries and anything pasta for a bit, people were eating a lot of protein. Other than loosing weight the surprise benefit was hair and nail growth! People were amazed at how their nails were stronger and their hair seemed to not break off and grew out over time (over the diet craze that lasted about a year or so).
Hair and nails are made of protein and more than using a protein treatment that can go into the hair (of which I do not recommend as it can make your hair brittle and break off when used too much - I am more about moisture and hydration than protein treatments) but if you want to impact your hair more - CONSUME more protein.

Many people love this protein powder HERE that can be mixed with water - or, I love to mix it with high protein yogurt that adds up to close to 50 grams of protein per serving! Just make sure to mix it well with yogurt to make it a nice smooth consistency - then I add blueberries or mixed berries and also walnuts to make for a complete meal with micro nutrients to last the morning.
If you do research as I do you will find many experts telling us most people are short on consuming enough protein in their diet which can lead to all sorts of consequences.

3 - Stress. People want a pill or an ointment for issues that relate to hair loss and it's sad that they do not want to take actions to reduce overall stress.
Breathing exercises mentioned in this killer book HERE has helped many including myself. I do the Perfect Breathing Pattern as explained in the book. I can do it while driving, at work, at home, before bed, etc = anytime and anywhere FOR FREE.
If I have a stressful situation I can do what is called Box Breathing to bring me back to reality.

Listen - the world is gonna cause stress - and its not going away - and it is causing issues with your body, mind & soul UNCONSCIOUSLY making us react to life - would you not want to learn to manage it CONSCIOUSLY so that stress does not manage you?
Do you have anxiety?

I did.

Breathing helped to manage that instead of anxiety managing me.

I tighten up in my jaw, neck and core - and now, once I sense that - I breath...and it works to release tension in my body AND mentally.

If you are a Bible reader - I wrote a blog in my other circles that I mentor others with and you can learn about how Spiritual Disciplines can help as well if you are interested click HERE. These are the ones that helped me the most.

4 - Cold rinse your scalp - heck, do a cold shower rinse for your whole body. I do cold plunges (6 years now) and love the benefits of reduced inflammation, increased adrenaline and dopamine all produce a sense of well being and help with focus.
I do breath work and cold showers/plunges combined together.

Again, the world is trying to involuntarily break us - so, if you learn to voluntarily break yourself by doing challenging things - then, when the world tries to break you - you are way more prepared to take it on and lead into it compared to going passive or becoming a victim.

5 - Collegan - my client Ashley has had amazing results from a product she uses and sells - I usually do not recommend anyone unless I believe in the person I work with and Ashley is legit - the Beauty Focus Powder (click that link) comes in a few flavors and the regrowth I have seen with her is amazing IN EIGHT WEEKS!

6 - Biotin is a supplement that keeps showing up from my clients that say it helps them with hair growth. Check this one out HERE.

7 - Hair Growth Supplement HERE is recommended by many as well. My clients that go to Doctors office recommended this to help them as well.

8 - Long Hair Dont Care is a Co-Wash that is gentle on the scalp - I use this to massage into my scalp and leave it on for a few minutes and rinse it out. The mint feels great and with massaging into scalp helps bring blood flow and release tension. A tight scalp restricts blood flow to the follicle and over time starves the hair strand to shed. When checking out use CHA10 for 10% off your order.

9 - Get outside - go for a walk - get in nature - breath.

10 - Hug a loved one. Oxytocin is a major stress reliever hormone and all it takes is some physical touch.

Some of you reading this and Part One may be thinking "is this it?" and my reply is yes - we need nutrition of Omega 3's and Vitamin D3 & K2 and Zinc and we need to breath, get fresh air, increase oxygen capacity, do some Yoga, get more hugs & love and take on challenges to build inner resilience to what life throws at you more so than a magic shampoo or an oil that we think we can put on our hair to make it grow. It's what is going on in the inside that reveals what is going on on the outside.

Finally - when we take into consideration of genetics, thyroid issues, stress and diet - there is only so much we can do. What is covered in this blog series is what we can control...ourselves.

I share in my mentoring sessions the what we can control illustration:

The center is all of what we can control - the blue section is what we can influence and the outer grey section is no control at all.
I encourage you to take on what you can get from the linked resources and stay in the inner circle and give it time.

We loose 100 hairs a day on average! When you go a few days between redoing your hair it can look like a small animal in your hands in the shower. This is normal and if you have long hair it is even MORE noticible.
The good news is - we have new ones growing in daily - so, we want to do our best to care for it and protect it.

You should use the best conditioner you can afford and learn to use it based on what you learned in Cultivate Your Curls and I highly recommend Innersense Color Radiance Daily Conditioner (yes, even if you do not color your hair). This is one conditioner I have seen improve peoples hair more than any other conditioner...globally!
You may have hair breaking off from lack of hydration - so, using conditioner correctly as I teach can help to get the hair strands longer from NOT breaking off from mistreatment or lack of understanding how to use conditioner correctly.
Your hair can fill in and grow longer instead of break off and get stringy looking.

Overly layering hair happens when you ask for volume from a hairstylist - and this can cause hair to look flat and stringy, more so as it grows out over time. What you need is a reality check in that you need shape and design more so than a lot of layers. If you have been asking for volume for your flat thin hair for 20 years...then it's not working. Stylist that want your money will just give you what you are asking for more so than tell you the truth....and the truth is you are born with flat hair and we need to learn to embrace what you have and make it look as good as possible...that is the truth that needs to be expanded on in our industry AND teach the stylist the skills needed to serve you truthfully and professionally with.

That's what you get when you work with me.

For now,
Scott Musgrave: Founder of Curly Hair Artistry
